Graduate  Student  Research  Projects

Electron Microscopy Facility faculty are available to assist in graduate student's research in these capacities:

  • Training for the use of analytical and specimen preparation instruments;
  • Training in specimen preparation methods and procedures;
  • Consultations regarding sampling, samples, experimental design, methods and techniques, instrumentation and instrument related problems, data collection considerations, results interpretation, technical concerns or difficulties, and supplies procurement questions.

Facility employees may also be involved on a fee-for-services basis in graduate research that requires a one time or infrequent need for a specimen preparation and/or analytical service.

However, graduate students who have (a) extensive, long-term, on-going or complex needs of electron microscopy; (b) and/or have received training in specimen preparation methods and procedures and/or the use of analytical tools; (c) and/or plan to have results obtained from electron microscopy as significant parts of their research are expected to be solely responsible for the preparation of their specimens, data collection, and results.   These are important aspects of graduate training and the graduate research experience and are therefore not appropriate to delegate or contract to the Facility under fee-for-service practices.
