Research:

As a comparative immunologist with interests in the evolution of immunity, my interests focus on gaining a deeper understanding of innate immune systems and their modulation. In my lab, research exploits two models: the rainbow trout in which we study inflammatory components of the acute phase response, and effects of stress on innate immunity, and molluscan schistosomiasis, in which we investigate the mechanisms that determine susceptibility and resistance in this host-parasite system.

I teach a “Scientific Skills” seminar for new graduate students, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Scientific Communication for Biologists (Z 414). I also offer seminars and participate in areas of courses dealing with immunological aspects of cell biology and physiology. I serve as academic advisor to both undergraduates and graduate students.

Persons who have completed graduate degrees with me are in both research (Parke-Davis) and sales (Molecular Devices Corp) in the biotech industry, while others teach (Florida International University) and do research (University of Florida) in universities.

Beyond the OSU campus, I am immediate Past-President of the International Society for Developmental and Comparative Immunology. I also serve my profession through providing critical appraisals of research proposals submitted to funding organizations, and manuscripts submitted for publication in journals.
