External Advisors
The External Advisory Committee fulfils a number of important
roles in the operation and guiding of the MFBSC. The annual external
review is attended by the External Advisory Committee members
as well as the Internal Advisory Committee, all Center Investigators
and MFBSC staff, the Vice Provost for Research, and the Faculty
Liaison for the Office of Research. This two-day review covers
all aspects of Center operations. The Core Directors present overviews
of the progress during the previous year and plans for the coming
year, followed by presentations from individual research investigators.
Special emphasis is given each year to a timely Center-related
issue, for example, recruitment of the new Director (2001), new
directions for the Center including recruitment of new investigators
and establishment of new Center core units (2002), and preparation
for the Center site visit (2003).
In considering the composition of the External Advisory Committee,
the goal of the Director is to have a balance of experienced reviewers
with knowledge of the history and development of the MFBSC and“new
blood” drawn from established and nationally recognized
scientists with expertise in scientific and administrative issues
of importance to the Center.
In addition to the annual External Review, external advisors
provide two additional major advisory functions -- review of pilot
project proposals and selection of Center Investigators.
The 2003 external reviewers are:
• Dr. Christopher Michejda, Chief, Molecular Aspects of
Drug Design, NCI-Frederick
• Dr. Pat Walsh, Professor of Marine Biology and Director,
MFBSC, University of Miami
• Dr. Richard Peterson, Professor of Pharmacy, University
of Wisconsin, Madison
• Dr. Larry Marnett, Professor of Biochemistry, Vanderbilt
University.
Internal Advisors
The Internal Advisory Committee meets formally with the Center
Director and Investigators two to three times per year, but is
available on an as-needed basis. Internal advisors provide advice
in recruiting new investigators to the Center; review funding,
space, institutional support, and other administrative issues
that affect the Center; assist the Director in selecting pilot
project applications for funding; and serve as an on-going resource
for the Center Director. Internal advisors are:
• Dr. Roy Arnold, Executive Associate Dean, College of Agricultural
Sciences
• Dr, George Bailey, Past MFBSC Director, Distinguished
Professor of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology and MFBSC
Research Core Director
• Dr. Joseph Beckman, Ava Helen Pauling Endowed Professor,
The Linus Pauling Institute and Director, NIEHS Environmental
Health Sciences Center
• Dr. Balz Frei, Director, The Linus Pauling Institute
• Ms. Judy Goodenough, MFBSC accountant
• Dr. Jack Higginbotham, Professor of Nuclear Engineering
and Faculty Liaison, Research Office
• Dr. Mike Kent, Professor of Microbiology and Director,
Fish Disease Laboratory
• Dr. Donald Reed, Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry
and Biophysics and Past Director, EHSC
• Ms. Sandy Segna, Center Administrator
