What is Marine & Freshwater Biomedical Sciences?
|
Biomedicine is the branch of medical science that applies biological and physiological principles to clinical practice. Marine and freshwater biomedical science research at OSU uses aquatic models to address important issues in human toxicology and environmental health. The ultimate goal of these efforts is the advancement of approaches for the successful prevention and treatment of human diseases.
More specifically, the MFBS Center at OSU focuses on:
- the use of the trout tumor model for large-scale low dose response studies and for research on dietary modulation of carcinogenesis;
- the zebrafish model for studies on carcinogenesis and on neuro and developmental toxicology; and
- the isolation and characterization of natural products from marine algae, and the molecular mechanisms of their unique neurotoxicology and pharmacological properties.
