A requirement for this course is participation in a graded online homework system operated by Sapling Learning, Inc. There is a one-term cost (via the OSU Beaver Store) of $95 for 6 months of this service, or $110 for the entire year (Drs. Blakemore and Beaudry will be using this in CH 335 and CH 336). This service includes access to the E-text and may save you the need to purchase the hard-copy text. If you choose, you can pay for only Sapling access for $85 for this term only. Information on how to sign up and use this service is provided below.
While I realize this is an extra cost, I believe engaging in this iactive-learning activity will ensure you get the most out of the course.

Please be sure to use your ONID email address when you register; otherwise I will not be able to correctly assign the points you earn.

Sapling Learning - Organic Chemistry Question Sets
Sapling's chemistry questions are delivered in a web browser to provide real-time grading, response-specific coaching, improvement of problem-solving skills, and detailed answer explanations. Dynamic answer modules enable one to interact with 3D models and figures, utilize drag-and-drop synthetic routes, and draw chemical structures - including stereochemistry and curved arrows. Altogether, Sapling is cheaper than a tutor, provides more value than a solutions manual, and goes beyond a mere assessment exercise to give a learning experience.

Students, we will be using Sapling Learning for our homework. To get started:

  1. If you already have a Sapling Learning account, log in and skip to step 4.
  2. Log into Canvas, select CH 334, and go to "Macmillan Learning." Select "Connect with Sapling." The new page will have a button that says "Load Sapling homework in a new window." This will take you to the page that allows you to create a Sapling account. The Sapling/Canvas integration should point you to the correct course (but if there is ever a choice, make sure you choose CH334--I'm also using Sapling in another Organic Chemistry course this term!)
  3. Click "create account" located under the username box (be sure to use your ONID email). Supply the requested information and click "Create my new account". Check your email (and spam filter) for a message from Sapling Learning and click on the link provided in that email.
  4. If not already pointed to CH 334, find this course in the list (listed by subject, term, and instructor) and click the link.
  5. Select your payment options (access code, credit card, PayPal; there is also a free trial period if you are waiting for resources) and follow the remaining instructions.

Once you have registered and enrolled, you can log in at any time to complete or review your homework assignments.

During sign up - and throughout the term - if you have any technical problems or grading issues, send an email to support@saplinglearning.com explaining the issue. The Sapling support team is almost always more able (and faster) to resolve issues than your instructor and TAs. (One reason I choose Sapling over other systems is the speed of their technical support response.)
