University of Puget Sound Geology

CGE

Welcome!

Matt at Steens Mtns.I am working on a MS in Geology at Oregon State University. I work with Dr. Adam Kent in the laser ablation ICP-MS lab as well as TA-ing a variety of undergraduate labs. I am also a representative for our graduate student union, CGE, for the department of geosciences.

Current Work

I am interested in using microanalysis to study volatile behavior in igneous processes. Currently, I am analyzing melt inclusions of submarine and subaerial basalts at Kilauea Iki and Loihi volcanoes, Hawaii, to develop a budget for semi-volatile metal loss. Eventually I hope to extend this project to the Caribbean Large Igneous Province to see if these trace metals could have triggered an ocean anoxic event.

I enjoy learning about any geological process from a chemical perspective. As an undergrad at the University of Puget Sound I enjoyed a diverse range of subjects including anoxic sediments in Hood Canal, WA, and above sawdust waste under the intertidal zone in Tacoma, WA, but my main interest was in igneous petrology. I completed my senior thesis with Dr. Jeff Tepper on the petrology of Eocene intrusive rocks found throughout NE Washington.
