The C-H Stretch and Hybridization |
The C-H stretch is highly dependent on the hybridization and electronic structure of the carbon to which it is attached. Generally, the higher the s character, the higher the frequency. 3000 cm-1 is the common dividing line between sp3 (below) and sp2 (above); terminal alkynes are much higher in frequency.
Hexane: a typical alkane. Peaks at 2879, 2940 and 2966 cm-1. |
Acrolein: the aldehyde generates the peaks at 2700-2900 cm-1, but note the cluster at 3090-3120 cm-1. |
Toluene: Note two distinct groups of peaks above & below 3000 cm-1. |
Phenylacetylene: 3356 cm-1. |
